Maggie Valley on US-19, just to the northwest of Waynesville, is
primarily tourist oriented. Some tourism, e.g., Cataloochee Ski
Area, is year-round in Maggie Valley. Most other attractions are
for the warmer months: Ghost Town in the Sky, for example, is on
a plateau at an elevation of 4,588 feet overlooking the valley.
A special tram transports visitors up and down the steep slop;
this, in itself, is quite an adventure especially for the
younger set.
There is also a variety of venues available, for example, The
Eaglenest, Carolina Nights Dinner Theater and Diamond K Dance
Ranch with their variety of music venues. And, we would like to
add that Maggie Valley is family oriented by design — not
chance!
For those wishing to enjoy these beautiful mountains on horseback,
there is Cataloochee Ranch, Hemphill Mountain Campground,
Queen's Farm Riding Stables and Utah Mountain Riding Stables. If
you'd rather look at animals rather than ride them, there is the
Soco Gardens Zoo (which, by the way, is set in a beautiful array
of gardens). And, if you have dreams of finding the worlds
largest sapphire, drop by the Blue Ridge Gem Mine.
To the newcomer, Maggie Valley is a one street town: Soco Road
(alias US-19). Oh, there are lots of streets all leading up the
many coves onto the lofty heights that sandwich the 'Valley' but
it is very true that most of the activity is on or near Soco
Road.
