Trails
(Note: in the Nantahala National Forest equestrian trails are
marked with orange blazes)
Standing Indian Area
- these trails are routed mostly on gravel or grassy logging
roads. The Standing Indian area is virtually surrounded by
nearly mile-high peaks in the pattern of a horseshoe. The open
end (the northern end) is the gateway for the newly born
Nantahala River. Dozens of creeks and hundreds of springs,
grassy balds (many covered by purple Rhododendrons) and wildlife
rich marshes make up this area much of which is part of the
Southern Nantahala Wilderness Area. The Appalachian National
Scenic Trail follows the 'U' of the mountain ridges and many of
the trails here join the Appalachian Trail.
